Callington Community College has just netted almost £1m to create one of the best sports facilities in the South West, thanks to the UK’s largest sports charity, the Football Foundation. The college has scored the £988,106 funding goal to create a floodlit artificial pitch, a full sized grass pitch complete with a modern changing pavilion. The scheme will establish the college as a leading provider of sport in the area, complementing the existing facilities at the college, which include six pitches for junior players, five a side areas, gymnasium and a sports hall. Links will be established between the college and local primary schools and facilities will be open for use by the wider community outside of curricular hours. A number of local clubs including Callington Town Football Club, Callington Colts, Stoke Climsland Women’s Football Club will also be using the college. It is estimated the number of footballers at the site will more than treble, with over 1000 players expected to regularly use the site. Funded by the FA Premier League, the Football Association, Sport England and the Government, the Football Foundation is dedicated to revitalising the grass roots of the game, constructing modern football facilities, developing football as a force for social cohesion and as a vehicle for education in communities. Chief Executive of the Foundation, Peter Lee, welcomed the latest for sport in Cornwall: “We have now invested over £3m into sport in Cornwall and I am delighted the Football Foundation has been able to play a major role in revitalising sport in the region. The Callington Project will ensure that players of all ages and abilities have access to outstanding new facilities.”
